How to Get Your Brand Cited in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

A practical, step-by-step checklist for earning citations and recommendations in the AI tools your buyers use: crawler access, answer-first pages, entity facts and third-party proof.

ShareLinkedInXWhatsAppEmail

To get cited in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, your pages must be reachable by their crawlers, answer the question more clearly than anyone else, and be backed by facts the tools can confirm elsewhere. This checklist turns that into concrete work you can start this week.

Key takeaways

  • Allow the search crawlers: OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT), PerplexityBot, Googlebot (Gemini and AI Overviews) and Bingbot (Copilot).
  • Put a direct, specific answer in the first lines of every important page.
  • Make your brand facts identical across your site, profiles and directories.
  • Earn mentions on the third-party sites each tool already cites for your topic.

How each tool finds sources

Where AI tools get their sources
Tool Where sources come from What helps most
ChatGPT (search) Search partners plus OAI-SearchBot crawling Allowing OAI-SearchBot, clear answers, Bing visibility
Gemini Google Search index Strong Google SEO, structured content, entity clarity
Google AI Overviews / AI Mode Google Search index with query fan-out Ranking for related sub-questions, depth, freshness
Perplexity Its own crawler (PerplexityBot) plus search APIs Fresh, well-sourced pages, crawler access, citations on trusted sites
Microsoft Copilot Bing index Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow, Bing ranking

Make sure the crawlers can reach you

Check robots.txt, your CDN or firewall (Cloudflare and similar services can block AI bots by default) and any security plugin. Allow the search crawlers you want to be cited by, and make sure your key content is in the HTML rather than loaded only by JavaScript. Submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools too, because Copilot and parts of ChatGPT search depend on Bing.

Answer the question in the first lines

AI tools quote passages, not whole pages. Open every important page with a 40–60 word answer to its main question, then expand. Use question-style headings, short paragraphs and lists. If a buyer asks “how much does X cost”, give a real range and what changes it, instead of “contact us for a quote”.

Add evidence a model can trust

  • Specific numbers with a source and date
  • Original data from your own work, even small surveys or benchmarks
  • Named experts with credentials and an author page
  • Comparison tables with clear criteria
  • Real case examples with what was done and what changed
  • A visible “last updated” date on pages that change

Make your entity unmistakable

AI tools build an understanding of your brand from many sources. If your website says one thing, LinkedIn another and a directory a third, the model hedges or leaves you out. Write one canonical “brand facts” block (name, what you do, where, for whom, since when, key people) and use it everywhere. Add Organization or Person schema with sameAs links to your official profiles.

Earn mentions where the AI looks

Run your prompt set and list the third-party domains cited most often: review platforms, industry publications, comparison sites, forums, Wikipedia-style references. Those are the sites that shape AI answers in your niche. Aim PR, guest expertise, partnerships and review requests at them. One mention on a frequently cited site is worth more than dozens of random links.

Track and iterate

  • Fix the prompt set. Keep 30–100 prompts covering awareness, comparison and purchase questions.
  • Record four things per prompt. Cited (yes/no), mentioned (yes/no), description accuracy and competing sources.
  • Compare monthly. Look for prompts where you moved, and copy what worked to similar pages.
  • Tie it to leads. Use GA4 to track AI referral sessions and conversions next to the citation numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How does ChatGPT choose which websites to cite?

When ChatGPT searches the web it retrieves pages through its search partners and its own OAI-SearchBot crawler, then cites the pages it used to write the answer. Pages that are crawlable, relevant and contain a clear, specific answer are the ones it can use.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing me?

Not by itself. GPTBot collects data for model training; OAI-SearchBot is used for ChatGPT search results. You can block one and allow the other. If you want to be cited, do not block OAI-SearchBot.

Why does Perplexity cite my competitor and not me?

Usually because the competitor’s page answers the exact question more directly, is more recent, or is backed by more third-party sources. Compare the cited page with yours section by section.

How often should I check AI answers?

Monthly is enough for most businesses. Use the same prompts and settings each time so you are measuring a trend, not day-to-day noise.

Do backlinks still matter for AI citations?

Yes, indirectly. Links help pages rank and get retrieved, and mentions on trusted sites help AI tools trust and recommend your brand.
